Below are photos taken on an overflight of the Macal River Valley, upstream of the Chalillo dam, in February 2006.  These show the flooding of the area and many of the trees that indicate the original level of the river.  The unique riparian habitat, found in only a tiny fraction of Belize's territory, was essential for the nesting of the Scarlet Macaw and for tapirs and other herbivores who depended on it for food.  This is now all underwater.  There are reports that the karst limestone caves underground are seeping away the water from the dam--so while the habitat is destroyed, much of the water will not be available for producing energy anyway.
